About California Angels
The 1975 Angels were in their first full season under Dick Williams, hired the previous June after guiding Oakland to back-to-back World Series titles. California finished sixth in the AL West at 72-89, 25½ games behind the champion A's, undone by one of the era's thinnest lineups — the club managed just 55 home runs all year, prompting Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee's crack that the Angels "could take batting practice in a hotel lobby without damaging a chandelier." Mickey Rivers paced the regulars at .284, and Leroy Stanton's 14 homers and 82 RBI led the team. The pitching carried the club: Frank Tanana blossomed into an ace at 16-9, 2.62, with 269 strikeouts, and Ed Figueroa matched his win total. Nolan Ryan, working through elbow pain that would require offseason surgery, still no-hit Baltimore on June 1 for his fourth career no-hitter, tying Sandy Koufax's record.
