About Tom Egan
Thomas Patrick Egan signed with the Angels for a $100,000 bonus out of El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera, California, and reached the majors five weeks past his 18th birthday, debuting May 27, 1965. A right-handed-hitting catcher standing 6-foot-4, he spent most of a decade as Angels property, interrupted by a 1971-72 stint with the Chicago White Sox after a November 1970 trade that also sent Jay Johnstone and Tom Bradley to Chicago. Returning to California via the December 1973 Rule 5 draft, Egan authored his career's signature moment on September 28, 1974, catching Nolan Ryan's third career no-hitter at Anaheim Stadium, a 15-strikeout gem against the Minnesota Twins that ended when Ryan walked Harmon Killebrew and fanned Eric Soderholm. Egan finished with a .200 average, 22 home runs and 91 RBIs across ten seasons before his release in 1975, his final big-league year — the same season pictured on his last Topps card.
