1975 Topps #89 Jim Ray

About Jim Ray
James Francis Ray, a hard-throwing right-hander out of Holly High School in Holly, Michigan, signed with the Baltimore Orioles in 1963 before reaching the majors with Houston. He debuted for the Astros in September 1965, returned for good in 1968, and spent the next six seasons anchoring their bullpen — all but 20 of his 308 career appearances came in relief. In 1969 he fanned 115 batters in 115 innings, a stretch that earned him the nickname "Ray Gun" for his fastball. Two years later he turned in his best season, going 10-4 with a 2.12 ERA over 47 games. Houston traded him with Gary Sutherland to Detroit for Fred Scherman in December 1973, and his lone Tigers year, 1974, was his last in the majors. His 1975 Topps card, issued after his career had ended, closes out a nine-year line of 43-30, 3.61, and 25 saves.
