About Detroit Tigers

Card #18 carries an inset photo of manager Ralph Houk, hired away from the Yankees in October 1973 to rebuild a Tigers roster aging out of its 1968 championship core. His second full season in Detroit produced the low point: 57 wins against 102 losses, at the time the second-worst mark in franchise history, and a last-place finish in the AL East, 37½ games behind Boston. A 19-game losing streak ran from July 29 through August 15. Willie Horton anchored the offense as designated hitter with 25 home runs and 92 RBI, catcher Bill Freehan made his 11th and final All-Star team, and rookie center fielder Ron LeFlore hit .258 in his first full season. Ace left-hander Mickey Lolich went 12-18 before Detroit traded him to the Mets for Rusty Staub that December. Houk's rebuild paid off the next year with Mark Fidrych's rookie sensation.
