About Dick Sharon
Dick Sharon, an outfielder out of Sequoia High School in Redwood City, California, was the Pittsburgh Pirates' first-round pick, ninth overall, in 1968. Traded to Detroit for pitchers Jim Foor and Norm McRae that November, he debuted May 13, 1973, as a defensive replacement and delivered two RBIs in his first start two days later, an 8-0 win at Yankee Stadium. That July he was in the Tigers' lineup when Nolan Ryan no-hit Detroit, fanning a then-record 17 batters. Sharon hit .242 with seven homers as a part-time rookie and was voted the Tigers' Rookie of the Year, but a quiet 1974 under new manager Ralph Houk led Detroit to trade him, Ed Brinkman, and Bob Strampe to San Diego for Nate Colbert that November. This card, his final Topps issue, still lists him as a Tiger — and that year's checklist even misspelled his name 'Dick Sahron.' Back trouble ended his three-season, .218-hitting career in 1976; he later became a noted fly-fishing guide in Montana.
