1975 Topps #323 Fred Holdsworth

About Fred Holdsworth
A Detroit native and Northville High School valedictorian, Fred Holdsworth turned down football and baseball scholarships to sign with his hometown Tigers as a 21st-round pick in the 1970 draft. He debuted July 27, 1972 at age 20, then the youngest player in the American League, and spent three seasons as a Detroit spot starter, going winless at 0-5 in 15 games. On May 29, 1975 — his 23rd birthday — the Tigers traded him to Baltimore for Bob Reynolds; he spent that season at Triple-A Rochester, yet Topps gave him his first solo card, #323 in the 1975 set. The trade paid off in 1976, when Holdsworth became an effective Orioles reliever, opening the year by retiring 24 straight batters, a team record, en route to a 4-1 record, two saves, and a 2.04 ERA. Dealt to Montreal on his 25th birthday in 1977, he pitched two more seasons there before closing his career with the 1980 Brewers, then became an accountant, rising to vice president of finance at Comcast Cable's Midwest division.
