1975 Topps #141 Mickey Stanley

About Mickey Stanley
Mickey Stanley signed with the Detroit Tigers organization in 1960 for a reported $12,000 out of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and spent four seasons in the minors before debuting in September 1964. He held down center field for Detroit from 1964 to 1978, appearing in 1,516 games across 15 years with the club and earning four Gold Gloves (1968-1970, 1973) for defense regarded among the best of his generation. His signature moment came in the 1968 World Series, when manager Mayo Smith moved him from center field to shortstop-a position he had never played professionally-to make room for all three Tiger outfield bats. The gamble held: Stanley made just two errors in 34 chances at short and Detroit beat St. Louis in seven games. He also helped the Tigers to the 1972 AL East title before retiring in 1978 with a .248 career average. Card #141 in the 1975 Topps set captures him mid-career as Detroit's veteran defensive anchor in center.
