About this card

Cards #1-7 open the set as the '74 Highlights subset, each marking a record or milestone from the 1974 season.

About Al Kaline

Al Kaline signed with the Detroit Tigers for a $15,000 bonus straight out of Baltimore's Southern High School in 1953, bypassing the minor leagues entirely and debuting that June at age 18. He spent all 22 seasons in a Tigers uniform, patrolling right field with a powerful, accurate arm that earned him ten Gold Glove Awards, and made 18 All-Star teams, including every year from 1955 through 1967. In 1955, at just 20, he hit .340 to become the youngest batting champion in American League history. Kaline helped Detroit win the 1968 World Series and retired with 3,007 hits, 399 home runs, and a .297 career average, earning first-ballot election to the Hall of Fame in 1980 with 88.3% of the vote. Nicknamed "Mr. Tiger" for his loyalty to the only club he ever played for, Kaline reached the 3,000-hit milestone late in the 1974 season - the moment commemorated on card #4 of 1975 Topps' Highlights subset, his lone appearance in the set since Topps issued him no standard base card that year.
