About Ben Oglivie

A Panama-born left fielder out of the Bronx's Theodore Roosevelt High School, Ben Oglivie was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 11th round of the 1968 draft and broke in with the big club in September 1971. Blocked in Boston's crowded outfield, his lanky frame and awkward glove work earned him the nickname "Spiderman" before Boston dealt him to Detroit for Dick McAuliffe in October 1973. This 1975 Topps card catches him mid-transition with the Tigers, a part-time outfielder still searching for a regular job. Detroit shipped him to Milwaukee for Jim Slaton and Rich Folkers after the 1977 season, and the change made him a star: Oglivie made three All-Star teams (1980, 1982, 1983), won a Silver Slugger in 1980, and that year tied Reggie Jackson for the American League home run lead with 41 - becoming the first player born outside the United States to lead the AL in homers. He finished his 16-year career with a .273 average, 235 home runs and 901 RBI.
