1975 Topps #343 Danny Frisella

About Danny Frisella
Danny Frisella broke into pro ball as a 1966 third-round pick of the Mets out of Washington State, having shared an Alaska Goldpanners roster with future rotation-mate Tom Seaver. A curveball got him to the majors in 1967 as a spot starter, but the forkball Diego Segui taught him in Venezuelan winter ball after the 1969 season turned him into the Mets' bullpen ace. Paired with lefty Tug McGraw in 1970-72, the big, beefy right-hander — nicknamed "Bear" — had his best year in 1971: a 1.99 ERA and a team-high 12 saves. Traded to Atlanta and then to San Diego for Cito Gaston, Frisella — pictured on his 1975 Topps card — logged a career-high 97.2 innings over 65 games for the Padres that year, posting a 3.13 ERA while splitting closer duties with Bill Greif for nine saves apiece. He closed for the Brewers in 1976, then died in a dune buggy accident near his Phoenix home on January 1, 1977, at age 30. Serra High School in San Mateo later named its ballpark Frisella Field in his honor.
