About Vicente Romo
Vicente Romo Navarro was a hard-throwing Mexican right-hander whose card lists a 5-21-43 birthdate in error — he was actually born April 12, 1943, in Santa Rosalía, Baja California Sur. Nicknamed "Huevo" (Egg) for the shape of his face atop a skinny frame, he broke into pro ball with Guaymas in winter 1961-62 before Cleveland purchased his contract from the Mexico City Tigers in 1964. Drafted by the Dodgers in the November 1967 Rule 5 draft, he reached the majors in 1968 and spent parts of eight seasons (1968-74, 1982) — mostly in relief — with the Dodgers, Indians, Red Sox, White Sox and Padres, going 32-33 with a 3.36 ERA and 52 saves. Traded to San Diego before 1973, he became the Padres' first Mexican-born player and led the club in saves in 1974 before his release that spring. Back home, "Huevo" became a Mexican League legend — 182 wins and a 2.49 ERA over 16 summer seasons, plus the Mexican Pacific League's all-time records for wins, strikeouts and ERA in winter ball — a legacy marked by the annual Vicente Romo Trophy for its top pitcher and his 1992 induction into the Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame.
