1975 Topps #248 Randy Jones

About Randy Jones
Randall Leo Jones signed with the San Diego Padres as their fifth-round pick in 1972 out of Chapman University, where he set the school's career strikeout record. In the minors, Double-A pitching coach Warren Hacker steered him toward the sinker that would define his career, and Jones debuted with San Diego in June 1973. After an 8-22 season in 1974, tied for the NL's most losses, his 1975 Topps card (#248) catches him on the cusp of stardom: that year he went 20-12, led the league with a 2.24 ERA, became the first 20-game winner in Padres history, made his first All-Star team, and finished runner-up to Tom Seaver for the NL Cy Young Award. Teammates called him "Junkman" for the off-speed sinkers and sliders he threw in place of a fastball. He topped that in 1976, going 22-14 to become the first Padre to win the Cy Young, setting an NL record with a 16-3 first-half mark. A nerve injury late that season blunted his stuff; he pitched six more years, closing his career with the Mets in 1982. San Diego retired his No. 35 and inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 1999.
