About Larry Hardy

Howard Lawrence "Larry" Hardy was born January 10, 1948, in Goose Creek, Texas, and pitched at the University of Texas at Austin before the New York Yankees drafted him in 1969 and the San Diego Padres took him in the 23rd round in 1970. Hardy debuted with the Padres on April 28, 1974, and worked almost entirely out of the bullpen that season, appearing in 76 games — at the time a major-league rookie record for games pitched — while going 9-4 with two saves. His 1975 Topps card (#112) is his rookie card, capturing that record-setting San Diego season. He pitched in just 18 more big-league games with the Padres and Houston Astros in 1975-76, finishing his career 9-4 with a 5.29 ERA in 94 appearances, then spent parts of two decades as a minor-league pitching coach and manager before joining Johnny Oates' Texas Rangers coaching staff from 1995 through 2001.
