About Derrel Thomas

Derrel Osbon Thomas was the No. 1 overall pick in the January 1969 draft, taken by the Houston Astros out of Susan Miller Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, alma mater of Sparky Anderson and Chili Davis. A switch-hitter who eventually played every position but pitcher, he debuted with Houston in September 1971 and was traded to San Diego that December for Dave Roberts. Thomas spent 1972-1974 as a Padres infielder before a Winter Meetings trade sent him to San Francisco for Tito Fuentes and Butch Metzger, setting up his standout 1975 season (.276, 48 RBI, 28 steals, all career highs) — even though his 1975 Topps card still shows him in a Padres uniform. He returned to San Diego in 1978, then helped the Dodgers win the 1981 World Series. Over 15 seasons with seven clubs he batted .249 with 1,163 hits and 43 home runs, later becoming the first manager of the Boise Hawks in 1987.
