1975 Topps #379 Bernie Carbo

About Bernie Carbo
Bernardo Carbo was Cincinnati's first-round pick — 16th overall — in the 1965 draft, one round ahead of Johnny Bench. After hitting .359 at Triple-A Indianapolis, the outfielder reached the majors in 1969 and broke out in 1970 with a .310 average, 21 homers and a 1.004 OPS, earning The Sporting News' National League Rookie of the Year award. Traded to St. Louis in 1972 and to Boston for Reggie Smith in October 1973, Carbo settled into the Red Sox outfield and, alongside Bill Lee and Fergie Jenkins, became one of the clubhouse's self-styled 'Buffalo Heads.' His signature moment came as a pinch-hitter in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series against his former Reds teammates: trailing by two in the eighth inning, he drove a three-run homer to tie the game and set up Carlton Fisk's game-winning homer in the 12th, forcing a Game Seven. It was his second pinch homer of that Series, matching a 16-year-old record, and the Red Sox inducted the moment into their team Hall of Fame in 2004. Carbo played 12 big-league seasons for six clubs, batting .264 with 96 home runs and 358 RBI.
