About Sal Bando

Sal Bando entered pro ball as a sixth-round pick of the Kansas City Athletics in MLB's inaugural 1965 draft, fresh off being named Most Outstanding Player of Arizona State's championship College World Series team. He debuted in September 1966 and settled in as Oakland's everyday third baseman after the franchise moved west in 1968. Manager Hank Bauer named him team captain in 1969 — the only man to hold that title in Athletics history — and Bando anchored the "Swingin' A's" dynasty through three consecutive World Series titles (1972-74) and five straight AL West crowns. A four-time All-Star (1969, 1972-74), he led the American League in doubles, extra-base hits, and total bases in 1973, and was runner-up for AL MVP in 1971 before finishing third and fourth in the voting in 1973 and 1974. This 1975 Topps card, issued the year after Oakland's third straight championship, isn't his rookie card — he'd debuted with Kansas City years earlier — and captures him during his second-to-last season in Oakland before he left for Milwaukee as a free agent. He later spent eight years as the Brewers' general manager and was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2013.
