1975 Topps #91 Dick Green

About Dick Green
Dick Green anchored second base for the "Swingin' A's" dynasty that won three straight World Series from 1972 to 1974, a steady defensive presence on a roster built around big arms and bigger personalities. Born in Sioux City, Iowa, and raised in Yankton and Mitchell, South Dakota, he signed with the Kansas City Athletics before 1960 and debuted in the majors on September 9, 1963. He never won a Gold Glove in an era loaded with fine second basemen, but teammates and opponents alike considered him one of the surest-handed infielders in the league. In the 1974 World Series he went hitless in 13 at-bats yet still took home the Babe Ruth Award for his fielding, tying a Series record with three double plays started in Game Three and closing Game Five with a perfect relay that nailed Bill Buckner at third. Oakland released him before the 1975 season pictured here, and rather than sign elsewhere, Green retired to run his family's South Dakota moving business, closing a 12-year career with a .240 average, 960 hits and 80 home runs.
