1975 Topps #45 Joe Rudi

About Joe Rudi
Joseph Oden Rudi broke into pro ball with the Kansas City Athletics organization and debuted in the majors in 1967, but it took several seasons before he matured into the polished left fielder who anchored Oakland's early-1970s dynasty. From 1972 to 1974 the A's won three straight World Series, and Rudi was central to all of them: he hit .300 in 70 career Series at-bats and delivered the signature defensive play of the 1972 Fall Classic, a leaping, backhanded catch at the left-field fence that robbed Denis Menke and preserved a Game 2 win. Two years later his Game 5 home run off Mike Marshall clinched the 1974 championship. A three-time All-Star -- in 1972, 1974 and 1975, the season pictured on this card -- Rudi led the American League in hits in 1972 and total bases in 1974, won three straight Gold Gloves (1974-76), and finished runner-up for AL MVP twice. He played 16 seasons with Oakland, California and Boston, retiring with a .264 average, 179 home runs and 810 RBI, and was inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.
