About Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies' 1975 team card catches a franchise on the rise under manager Danny Ozark, whose inset photo sits above a young nucleus built around Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski. In May, general manager Paul Owens completed two moves that reshaped the roster: sending Willie Montañez to the Giants for outfielder Garry Maddox, then reacquiring Dick Allen, whose return to Veterans Stadium on May 14 drew a standing ovation before Steve Carlton blanked Cincinnati, 4-0, with Allen in the lineup at first base. Behind Carlton's arm and the emerging bats of Schmidt and Luzinski, Philadelphia went 86-76, its first winning season in eight years, but the Pittsburgh Pirates ran away with the NL East, finishing six and a half games ahead.
