About Jim Lonborg

Jim Lonborg spent parts of fifteen big-league seasons as a right-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox (1965-1971), Milwaukee Brewers (1972), and Philadelphia Phillies (1973-1979). A Stanford pre-med student, he signed with Boston in 1963 and reached the majors in 1965. His signature year came in 1967, when he anchored the Red Sox' "Impossible Dream" pennant run, leading the American League in wins (22) and strikeouts (246), outdueling the Twins on the season's final day to clinch the pennant, and throwing a one-hit shutout in Game 2 of the World Series against St. Louis. That fall he won the AL Cy Young Award, the first in Red Sox history. Known as "Gentleman Jim" for his soft-spoken, articulate, pre-med demeanor - a contrast to his willingness to pitch inside - he battled shoulder trouble stemming from a skiing injury before finding a second act in Philadelphia, going 17-13 in 1974 and 18-10 in 1976 as the Phillies reached the NLCS in 1976 and 1977. His 1975 Topps card, issued in Phillies pinstripes, captures that resurgence; he finished with 157 career wins and later practiced as a dentist.
