1975 Topps #267 Dick Ruthven

About Dick Ruthven
Richard David Ruthven starred at Fresno State, where his 1.50 ERA and school-record strikeout total in 1971 made him a first-team All-American, before the Philadelphia Phillies took him with the No. 1 pick of the January 1973 secondary draft and signed him for a $100,000 bonus. He reached the majors that April, just the fifth pitcher since 1962 to jump straight from college to the big leagues, and his 1975 Topps #267 card catches him in his second full Phillies season. A hard-throwing right-hander with a sharp curveball, Ruthven pitched for the Phillies (1973-75, 1978-83), Atlanta Braves (1976-78), and Chicago Cubs (1983-86), earning All-Star selections in 1976 and 1981. His best year came in 1980: a career-high 17 wins, then two shutout relief innings to win the pivotal Game 5 of the NLCS, and a start in the World Series as Philadelphia claimed its first championship. He finished 123-127 with a 4.14 ERA over 14 seasons before a rare vascular condition ended his career in 1986.
