About Del Unser

Del Unser, born December 9, 1944, in Decatur, Illinois, was the son of former major-league catcher Al Unser, who taught him: "When you put on a uniform, you hustle." A 1966 first-round pick of the Washington Senators out of Mississippi State, where he was twice All-SEC, Unser broke in as a rookie in 1968 and developed into a smooth-fielding center fielder, leading the American League with eight triples in 1969. Traded to Cleveland, then to the Phillies in December 1972, he is pictured on card #138 of the 1975 Topps set as a Philadelphia outfielder. After stints with the Mets and Expos, Unser returned to the Phillies as a free agent in 1979 and became a clutch reserve on the 1980 World Series champions, lining game-tying pinch-hit doubles in Games 2 and 5 against Kansas City. He finished his 15-year career in 1982 with a .258 average, 1,344 hits and 87 home runs, then spent decades as a Phillies coach, farm director and scout.
