About Mike Anderson
Mike Anderson entered pro ball as the Philadelphia Phillies' first-round pick, sixth overall in the 1969 draft, signing out of Timmonsville High School in South Carolina after turning down a football scholarship. He hit .322 in three minor-league seasons before a September 1971 call-up. Platooning in right field with Bill Robinson, Anderson took over the job in 1974 and posted career highs of 34 RBIs and a .251 average. Traded to St. Louis for pitcher Ron Reed in December 1975, he thrived as a bench outfielder, batting .333 as a pinch hitter in 1976. A stop with Baltimore in 1978 was rough, and he closed his career back in Philadelphia in 1979, even pitching a scoreless inning in relief against the Cubs that June. Anderson finished with a .246 average, 28 home runs and 134 RBIs across nine seasons; his brother Kent Anderson later played infield in the majors. His 1975 Topps card, #118, captures him mid-career with the Phillies.
