1975 Topps #326 Wayne Twitchell

About Wayne Twitchell
Wayne Twitchell was the third overall pick in the 1966 MLB draft, taken by the Houston Astros out of Woodrow Wilson High School in Portland, Oregon, where he was an all-state quarterback and ballplayer. The 6-foot-6 right-hander made his major-league debut with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1970, then was traded to the Philadelphia Phillies the following spring, where he spent the bulk of his career (1971-1977). His breakout came in 1973: pitching as both a starter and reliever, he threw five complete-game shutouts, was twice named NL Pitcher of the Week, and made the All-Star Game as the Phillies' lone representative, striking out Reggie Jackson in a scoreless sixth inning. He finished 13-9 with a 2.50 ERA, third-best in the league, before a season-ending collision with Billy Williams. Twitchell later pitched for Montreal, the Mets, and Seattle, retiring in 1979 with a 48-65 record, 3.98 ERA and 789 strikeouts over 282 games. His 1975 Topps card, #326, captures him with the Phillies during that stretch.
