1975 Topps #325 Tony Oliva

About Tony Oliva
Tony Oliva signed with the Minnesota Twins organization out of Pinar del Río, Cuba, working through the low minors before a September 1962 call-up put him in the Twins outfield for good. The left-handed hitting right fielder won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1964 while also topping the league in batting - the first Rookie of the Year winner to do so - then repeated as batting champion in 1965 as Minnesota won the AL pennant. He added a third batting title in 1971 and a Gold Glove in 1966, and his run of eight consecutive All-Star selections to open his career broke Joe DiMaggio's old record of six. Fans and Twin Cities media knew him as "Tony-O." A series of severe knee injuries eventually pushed him into a designated-hitter role for his last four seasons, but he still closed out his career in 1976 with a .304 batting average, 220 home runs and 947 RBIs, all in a Twins uniform. Minnesota retired his No. 6, and the Golden Days Era Committee finally elected him to the Hall of Fame in 2022.
