About Minnesota Twins
This 1975 Topps team card catches Frank Quilici, pictured in the manager inset, in what would be his last season running the Twins. Promoted from coach to skipper in July 1972, Quilici had guided Minnesota to three straight third-place finishes; 1975 broke that streak, as the Twins slipped to fourth in the AL West at 76-83, 20½ games behind the division-winning Oakland Athletics. Calvin Griffith fired him after the September 28 season finale, replacing him that November with Gene Mauch. The roster still had bright spots: Rod Carew won his fifth AL batting title at .359, the club's only All-Star, while Jim Hughes (16-14), Bert Blyleven (15-10), and Dave Goltz (14-14) carried the rotation. The season also closed a chapter — Harmon Killebrew, released by the Twins that January, returned to Metropolitan Stadium with the Royals for "Harmon Killebrew Day" and clubbed a first-inning home run.
