About Bert Blyleven

Born Rik Aalbert Blyleven on April 6, 1951, in Zeist, Netherlands — his family anglicized the surname from Blijleven after emigrating first to Saskatchewan, Canada, then to Garden Grove, California — Blyleven grew up idolizing Sandy Koufax and built a mound in his backyard to perfect the curveball that became his signature pitch. Drafted by the Twins in the third round in 1969, he debuted at 19 in 1970 and quickly established himself as an ace, winning 20 games with nine shutouts in 1973, the year of his first All-Star selection. His 1975 Topps card (#30) misspells his given name as "Bert Rikalbert Blyleven" instead of Rik Aalbert. Traded from Minnesota in 1976, Blyleven threw a no-hitter in his final start for Texas in 1977, helped Pittsburgh win the 1979 World Series, and returned to Minnesota to pass 3,000 strikeouts and capture a second championship in 1987. Teammates dubbed him the "Frying Dutchman" for his love of setting hotfoots. He retired in 1992 with 287 wins, 3,701 strikeouts (fifth all-time), and 60 shutouts, and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2011 — the first Dutch-born player so honored.
