About Bill Campbell
Bill Campbell's 1975 Topps card (#226) catches him mid-transformation from swingman to workhorse closer for the Minnesota Twins. Nicknamed "Soup" after the Campbell Soup Company, he signed with the Twins as an amateur free agent and reached the majors in July 1973 after starring at Class A Wisconsin Rapids and AAA Tacoma. A spring arm injury pushed him between the rotation and bullpen in 1975, but new manager Gene Mauch handed him the closer's job in 1976, and Campbell answered with a league-leading 78 appearances, a 17-5 record with 20 saves, and the inaugural AL Rolaids Relief Man Award. He parlayed that breakout into a lucrative free-agent deal with Boston, where he made the 1977 All-Star team, led the AL in saves, and became the award's first back-to-back winner. Campbell pitched until 1987, finishing with 83 wins and 126 saves across seven teams. He died in 2023 at age 74.
