About Steve Braun
Steve Braun was a patient left-handed bat who shuttled between third base, second base, shortstop, and left field for the Minnesota Twins across a fifteen-year big-league career. Drafted by Minnesota in the 10th round of the 1966 draft out of Hopewell Valley Central High School in Pennington, New Jersey, Braun lost two seasons to military duty before debuting on Opening Day 1971. With Rod Carew and Harmon Killebrew blocking the infield, he settled in as a versatile semi-regular who got on base and hit for average. His 1975 Topps card, #273, arrived on the heels of his finest season, a career-best .302 with 137 hits. After stops with the expansion Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, and Toronto Blue Jays, Braun found his niche as a St. Louis Cardinals pinch-hitting specialist, drawing a decisive bases-loaded walk in Game Two and lining a go-ahead single in Game Seven of the 1982 World Series as St. Louis beat Milwaukee. He retired as the Cardinals' all-time pinch-hit leader and later coached hitting for the Boston Red Sox organization.
