About Danny Thompson

Danny Leon Thompson broke in with the Minnesota Twins on June 25, 1970, after the club made him its top pick in the secondary phase of the 1968 draft following an All-American career at Oklahoma State. He took over as Minnesota's regular shortstop in 1972, and this 1975 Topps card catches him in his prime years with the club. The day before his 26th birthday in February 1973, a routine physical uncovered granulocytic leukemia; Thompson kept playing anyway, batting .270 in 1975 to lead all American League shortstops and earning baseball's 1974 Hutch Award for competitive courage in the face of the disease. Traded to Texas with Bert Blyleven in June 1976, he appeared in his last game that October 2. He died ten weeks later, on December 10, 1976, at Rochester's St. Mary's Hospital following spleen surgery, at age 29. Teammate Harmon Killebrew helped launch an annual golf tournament in his memory in 1977 — now the Killebrew-Thompson Memorial — which has raised more than $15 million for cancer research.
