About Ken Brett
Kenneth Alven Brett was born September 18, 1948, in Brooklyn and grew up in El Segundo, California, where the Boston Red Sox took him with the fourth overall pick of the 1966 draft. A year later, at 19, he became the youngest pitcher ever to appear in a World Series, throwing 1⅓ scoreless relief innings against St. Louis. Arm trouble slowed his rise; he was traded to Milwaukee, then Philadelphia, where in 1973 he set a major-league record for pitchers by homering in four consecutive starts. Pittsburgh acquired him that October, and card #250 in the 1975 Topps set catches him a year removed from his finest season: in 1974 he made the All-Star team and won the All-Star Game as the Pirates' lone representative, carried a perfect game into the ninth on May 27 before settling for a two-hit shutout, and hit .310 for the NL East champions. Elbow trouble limited him to 23 games in 1975, though Pittsburgh repeated as division champs. Brett pitched 14 seasons for a then-record 10 teams before retiring in 1981, the second of four ballplaying Brett brothers behind Hall of Famer George.
