About Fran Healy
Fran Healy, born Francis Xavier Healy on September 6, 1946, in Holyoke, Massachusetts, came from a baseball family: his uncle, catcher Francis Healy, played for the pennant-winning 1934 Gas House Gang Cardinals. Signed by Cleveland Indians scout Hoot Evers for a $40,000 bonus, Healy spent 1965-1968 in Cleveland's farm system before debuting with the Kansas City Royals on September 3, 1969. A 6-foot-5 right-handed catcher, he anchored Kansas City's receiving corps through the mid-1970s, most memorably catching both of Steve Busby's no-hitters, against Detroit in 1973 and Milwaukee in 1974. His 1975 Topps card, #251, catches him mid-career with the Royals, the year he hit .255 in 56 games. Traded to the Yankees in 1976, Healy won a World Series ring in 1977 and became a trusted go-between for Reggie Jackson, Billy Martin, and Thurman Munson. He retired in 1978 with a .250 career average and moved straight into the broadcast booth, calling Mets games for two decades, including their 1986 championship run.
