About Jim Wohlford
Jim Wohlford broke into pro ball as a two-time draftee, taken by the Angels in 1969 out of Mount Whitney High in his hometown of Visalia, California, then by the Royals in the third round of the 1970 January secondary draft after two years at College of the Sequoias. He was the American Association's 1972 Rookie of the Year at Omaha, then debuted for Kansas City that September. A right-handed outfielder prized for his glove, Wohlford took over left field from Lou Piniella in 1974 and hit .271 in the only season he topped 500 at-bats. He later played for Milwaukee (1977-79), San Francisco (1980-82), and Montreal (1983-86), finishing a 15-year career at .260 with 21 homers and 305 RBI, mostly as a reserve and late-inning defensive replacement. Wohlford holds a quirky footnote in baseball quote lore: a Kansas City newspaper quoted him saying "Ninety per cent of this game is half mental" in April 1974, years before the line was credited to Danny Ozark and, more famously, Yogi Berra.
