About John Mayberry
John Claiborn Mayberry (born February 18, 1949, in Detroit) starred in three sports at Northwestern High School before Houston made him the sixth overall pick of the 1967 draft out of the University of Michigan, ahead of Bobby Grich and Ted Simmons. After four unsettled seasons with the Astros, a December 1971 trade sent the left-handed-hitting first baseman to Kansas City for pitchers Jim York and Lance Clemons. Mayberry became the club's first 100-RBI man in 1972, then made back-to-back All-Star teams in 1973-74; in 1973 he led the American League in walks (122) and on-base percentage (.417). His finest season came in 1975, pictured on this card: he set career highs with 34 home runs, 106 RBIs and a .963 OPS, again led the AL in walks, earned AL Player of the Month honors that July, and finished runner-up to Fred Lynn in MVP voting. Known as "Big John" for his imposing 6-foot-3 frame, he hit for the cycle in 1977 before a rocky ALCS led Kansas City to deal him to Toronto. He retired in 1982 with 255 home runs and entered the Royals Hall of Fame in 1996.
