About Mike Cosgrove
Michael John Cosgrove, a left-handed pitcher, was born February 17, 1951, in Phoenix, Arizona, and graduated from Bourgade Catholic High School in 1969. Rather than sign with the Cincinnati Reds, who took him in the 16th round that June, he enrolled at Phoenix College and was picked by the Houston Astros in the second round of the January 1970 secondary draft. He reached the majors on September 10, 1972, working almost exclusively as a left-handed reliever out of the Houston bullpen. His best years came back to back: a 7-3 record with a 3.50 ERA in 1974, then a 3.03 ERA with five saves in 1975 - the season behind his rookie card, #96 in the 1975 Topps set. Cosgrove spent his entire five-year major-league career with the Astros, finishing in 1976 with a 12-11 record, a 4.03 ERA, and 122 strikeouts over 274 2/3 innings.
