About Lee May
Lee May, "The Big Bopper" (originally "The Big Bopper from Birmingham," coined by Reds teammate Tommy Helms), broke in with Cincinnati in 1965 and by 1967 was NL Rookie of the Year and a Topps All-Star Rookie honoree. A punishing right-handed slugger for the Big Red Machine alongside Johnny Bench, Tony Pérez and Pete Rose, May hit 39 home runs in 1971 and starred in the 1970 World Series, batting .389 with two homers and a then-record eight RBI in the five-game loss to Baltimore. That November, Cincinnati traded him to Houston for Joe Morgan and four others; May anchored the Astros' lineup from 1972-74, driving in 105 runs in 1973, second in the NL, during a 21-game hitting streak. His 1975 Topps #25 card, issued just after Houston sent him to Baltimore that December, captures his final Astros season. May went on to lead the AL in RBI with 109 for the 1976 Orioles and reached the World Series again in 1979, retiring in 1982 with 354 home runs and 1,244 RBI - one of only 11 players with 100-RBI seasons for three different clubs. Never inducted into Cooperstown, he was enshrined in both the Orioles' and Reds' Halls of Fame.
