About Dave Roberts

Dave Roberts broke in with the expansion Padres in 1969, and after early elbow and shoulder trouble forced him to reinvent himself as a control pitcher, put together a career year in 1971: a 2.10 ERA, second-best in the National League, and a 12-inning shutout duel with Tom Seaver. San Diego traded him to Houston that December, and card #301 catches him mid-career with the Astros (1972-75), the most productive stretch of his 13 seasons - a 17-11, six-shutout 1973 and a one-hitter over the Phillies. Dealt to Detroit after 1975, Roberts pitched six more seasons for six more clubs before retiring in 1981 with 103 wins, 957 strikeouts and a 3.78 ERA over 445 games. His only postseason work came as a workhorse long reliever for the 1979 World Series champion "We Are Family" Pirates, who voted him a full championship share. Card #558, also billed as Dave Roberts on the Padres in this same set, actually pictures an unrelated player, third baseman David Wayne Roberts, San Diego's No. 1 overall pick in 1972, one of the hobby's stranger same-name coincidences.
