About Tom Griffin
Thomas James Griffin was a hard-throwing right-hander whom the Houston Astros made the fourth overall pick of the 1966 draft out of Grant High School in Los Angeles, where he had quarterbacked the football team. He broke into the majors on April 10, 1969, and by season's end had struck out 200 batters in 188⅓ innings, going 11-10 with a 3.54 ERA — making Houston just the second team in major league history to field three 200-strikeout pitchers in a season, alongside Larry Dierker and Don Wilson. Griffin never matched that ceiling again, but he pitched effectively in stretches, including a one-hit, complete-game win over Pittsburgh on May 7, 1974. His 1975 Topps card caught him the year after that 14-10 season, amid a rockier 3-8, 5.33 ERA stretch before Houston dealt him to San Diego in 1976. He pitched until 1982, closing his career with the Angels, Giants and Pirates, finishing 77-94 with 1,054 strikeouts over 14 seasons.
