About Houston Astros
The 1975 Astros debuted their now-iconic rainbow uniforms carrying high hopes after three straight near-.500 seasons, but the year unraveled quickly. Right-hander Don Wilson, whose number the club retired that April, had died of carbon monoxide poisoning that January, and Houston lost 16 of its first 24 games. Rookie José Cruz homered in his Astros debut on Opening Day, first baseman Bob Watson made the All-Star team and scored baseball's millionth run on May 4, and center fielder César Cedeño earned his fourth straight Gold Glove — rare bright spots on a team mired in last place. With Houston at 47–80 on August 18, manager Preston Gómez was fired and replaced by Bill Virdon, who went 17–17–1 the rest of the way. The Astros finished 64–97–1, last in the NL West, 43½ games behind the champion Reds — the worst record in franchise history to that point.
