1975 Topps #488 Bill Travers

About Bill Travers
William Edward Travers was a left-handed pitcher who spent parts of nine big-league seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers and California Angels. Born in Norwood, Massachusetts, he was drafted by the Brewers in the sixth round of the 1970 draft and reached the majors on May 19, 1974, after elbow surgery that rerouted his ulnar nerve — a procedure that would later become known as Tommy John surgery. His 1975 Topps card, issued the year he moved into Milwaukee's rotation and went 6-11 with a 4.29 ERA, arrived just before his breakout: in 1976 Travers went 15-16 with a 2.81 ERA over a career-high 240 innings, earned his only All-Star selection, and threw shutouts against the Yankees, White Sox and Angels. Recurring arm trouble, including a second elbow operation performed by Dr. Frank Jobe, limited the rest of his career, which he closed out with the Angels in 1983. He finished 65-71 with a 4.10 ERA and 488 strikeouts, and was inducted into the Brewers' inaugural Wall of Honor class in 2014.
