About Kevin Kobel
Kevin Kobel, a left-hander out of St. Francis High School in Athol Springs, New York, was picked by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 11th round of the 1971 draft. After going 20-24 in three minor league seasons, he debuted on September 8, 1973, striking out the first two Yankees he faced - at 19 years, 341 days, the only pitcher in franchise history to debut as a teenager. His 1975 Topps card catches him after a full 1974 rookie season (6-14, 3.99 ERA) in which he was especially tough on New York, going 3-0 with a 2.10 ERA against the Yankees. Arm trouble limited him to 30 innings in 1975, and he returned for a third Brewers callup in 1976 before the Mets purchased his contract. He had his best season in 1978 (5-6, 2.91 ERA) and made 27 starts in 1979, finishing his six-year career 18-34 with a 3.88 ERA and 205 strikeouts before a June 1980 trade to Kansas City ended his major league run.
