About Darrell Porter
Darrell Porter's 1975 Topps card (#52) captures him as Milwaukee's young backstop the year after his first All-Star selection. A first-round pick, 4th overall, by the Brewers out of Southeast High School in Oklahoma City in the 1970 draft, the left-handed-hitting catcher debuted with Milwaukee on September 2, 1971, at age 19 and finished third in the 1973 AL Rookie of the Year vote. Traded to Kansas City after the 1976 season, he earned three more All-Star nods and had his finest year in 1979, batting .291 with 20 homers, 112 RBIs and a league-leading 121 walks, joining Cochrane, Berra, Campanella, Bench and Fisk as the only catchers with 100 runs and 100 RBIs in a season - with only Cochrane also topping 100 walks. After a 1980 stint in drug rehabilitation, Porter reached three World Series, winning both NLCS and World Series MVP honors with the 1982 champion St. Louis Cardinals. He caught two no-hitters and closed his 17-year career in 1987 with 188 home runs and 826 RBIs; he died in 2002 at age 50.
