About George Scott
George 'Boomer' Scott anchored first base for the Milwaukee Brewers when this No. 360 card hit packs in 1975, the year the slugger tied Reggie Jackson for the American League home run crown (36) and led the league in RBIs (109) - the finest season of his career. Signed out of Coleman High School in Greenville, Mississippi, for an $8,000 bonus in 1962, Scott broke in with Boston in 1966, making the All-Star team and finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting. He starred on the Red Sox's 1967 'Impossible Dream' pennant winners, then built a defensive reputation into eight Gold Gloves (1967-68, 1971-76), the last five coming after a 1971 trade sent him to Milwaukee. Rookie teammate Joe Foy hung the nickname 'Boomer' on him in 1966, telling him he'd 'really put a boom on that ball' after a towering home run; Scott, in turn, dubbed his homers 'taters.' Traded back to Boston in 1977 for a third All-Star nod, he closed out his 14-year career in 1979 with the Royals and Yankees, finishing with 271 home runs and 1,051 RBIs. The Red Sox inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 2006.
