1975 Topps #76 Ed Sprague
About Ed Sprague
Ed Sprague was a 6-foot-4 right-hander who signed with the Cardinals in 1966 after being scouted playing Army softball in Germany, then reached Oakland in 1968. He pitched for the Athletics (1968-69), Reds (1971-73), Cardinals (1973), and Brewers (1973-76), working mostly out of the bullpen. His best year came with Milwaukee in 1974, when he set career highs with 7 wins, 57 strikeouts, and a 2.39 ERA over 20 games before a knee injury ended his season early. This 1975 Topps card, issued the following spring, captures him late in that Brewers run; he closed out his career in 1976 after eight big-league seasons, finishing 17-23 with a 3.84 ERA and 9 saves in 198 games. His son, Ed Sprague Jr., later starred for the Blue Jays' back-to-back World Series champions.
