About Johnny Briggs

John Edward Briggs broke in with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1964, kept on the big-league roster as a 20-year-old to shield him from baseball's first-year player draft, and won a platoon outfield job by 1965. Signed out of Paterson, New Jersey's Eastside High School for an $8,000 bonus in 1962, the left-handed hitter spent parts of eight seasons with the Phillies before an April 22, 1971 trade sent him to Milwaukee for Pete Koegel and Ray Peters. The deal made him an everyday player: Briggs topped 20 home runs in each of his first two Brewers seasons and drew MVP consideration in 1973, the year he went a perfect 6-for-6 with two doubles in a 9-4 road win at Cleveland — still the only nine-inning 6-for-6 game in Brewers history. His 1975 Topps card catches him in his final Milwaukee season before a June trade sent him to Minnesota; he was later named left fielder on the Brewers' all-decade team for the 1970s.
