About Clyde Wright
Clyde Wright grew up on a tobacco farm in Jefferson City, Tennessee, and starred at Carson-Newman College, striking out 22 batters in one 1965 NAIA World Series game to lead the Eagles to the title and earn tournament MVP honors. Drafted by the Angels that June, the left-hander debuted spectacularly less than a year later, beating Minnesota 8-1 on four hits — a start so smooth that new teammate Rick Reichardt joked a name like "Clyde" wouldn't do and dubbed him "Skeeter," the nickname that stuck for his career. After four uneven seasons in the rotation and bullpen, Wright added a screwball on Jim Fregosi's advice during winter ball in Puerto Rico and broke out in 1970, winning 22 games, no-hitting Oakland on July 3, and making his only All-Star team. Traded to Milwaukee for 1974, he became the Brewers' first 20-game loser — the same season his 1975 Topps card mistakenly lists as "Angels" on the back. He closed out his career with Texas in 1975, then pitched three more seasons for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan.
