About Herb Washington

Herb Washington reached the majors on April 4, 1974, without having played organized baseball since junior high — Oakland A's owner Charlie Finley signed the Michigan State sprint star, a four-time All-American and world-record holder in the 50- and 60-yard dashes, to serve purely as a "designated runner." Known from his track days as "Hurricane Herb," he trained under base-stealing great Maury Wills and appeared in 92 games in 1974, stealing 29 bases for Oakland's World Series champions, though he was famously picked off first base by Mike Marshall in Game 2 of that Series. Released early in 1975 after the A's added two more pinch-running specialists, Washington finished with 105 career games, 31 stolen bases, and 33 runs scored — all without ever taking an at-bat, throwing a pitch, or playing the field, an MLB record for position players. His 1975 Topps rookie card lists his position as "Pinch Run.", the only Topps card in history to do so. He later built a career as a McDonald's franchisee and a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York.
