About Bob Gallagher

A left-handed-hitting outfielder out of Stanford, Bob Gallagher starred for the semipro Alaska Goldpanners and was a 17th-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1968. He hit .300 or better at three straight minor-league stops before Boston claimed him in the 1971 Rule 5 draft, and his 1972 Red Sox debut came as a fill-in while Carl Yastrzemski was hurt. Houston grabbed him in another Rule 5 draft that winter; in 1973 he strung together a 12-game hitting streak and hit both home runs of his career. New York acquired him from the Astros for Ken Boswell in October 1974, and his lone season in Flushing, pictured on his 1975 Topps card, was mostly late-inning defense around stints at Triple-A Tidewater and Iowa — he went 2-for-15 in 33 games. His grandfather, Shano Collins, had played in the 1917 and 1919 World Series. Gallagher closed a four-year career at .220 and later spent 27 years teaching government at Santa Cruz High School; he died in Santa Cruz in August 2024.
