1975 Topps #43 Cleon Jones

About Cleon Jones
Cleon Jones broke in with the Mets in September 1963 after signing out of Alabama A&M and Grambling State, then anchored New York's left field for a dozen seasons before closing out a thirteen-year major-league career with a brief run with the White Sox in 1976. He made the All-Star team in 1969, starting in left for the National League, and hit .340 that season — third-best in the league and a Mets record that stood until 1998 — as the "Miracle Mets" stormed to their first World Series title. In Game Five against Baltimore, Jones was on first after Gil Hodges famously showed the umpire a shoe-polish smudge to reverse a hit-by-pitch call, and he closed out the Series himself by squeezing Davey Johnson's fly ball for the final out. He helped the Mets to a second pennant in 1973, starting the "Ball on the Wall" relay that cut down a Pirates run that September and kept New York's comeback alive. The Mets inducted Jones into their team Hall of Fame in 1991. This 1975 Topps card, issued the year the club released him, catches the "Miracle Met" outfielder near the close of his New York run.
