About Jon Matlack

Jonathan Trumpbour Matlack, a hard-throwing lefty out of West Chester, Pennsylvania, was the New York Mets' first-round pick (4th overall) in the 1967 draft. He debuted in July 1971, then broke out in 1972 with a 15-10, 2.32 ERA season that earned him National League Rookie of the Year honors. Along with Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman, Matlack anchored the Mets' "Big Three" rotation through the mid-1970s. He starred in the Mets' 1973 pennant run, holding Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine" to two hits in Game 2 of the NLCS and winning Game 4 of the World Series against Oakland. Matlack led the National League in shutouts in both 1974 and 1976, made three straight All-Star teams (1974-76), and shared MVP honors in the 1975 All-Star Game with Bill Madlock. This 1975 Topps card catches him fresh off that first shutout crown, years before he ended George Brett's 30-game hitting streak as a Texas Ranger. The Mets inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 2020.
